What’s New?

Have you ever wondered how Desktop Pilot’s flight simulator hardware compares to the controls in an actual Cessna aircraft? Desktop Pilot teamed up with @JJTheAirplane_Official and JJ brought our controls to his flight school to see how our hardware stacks up against the real plane. JJ and his CFI, Grace, put our Ignition Panel, Vernier Carb Heat Throttle Quadrant, Flaps Panel, Fuel Tank Select, and Parking Brake to the test against real Cessna controls. Check out the six-part series on our YouTube channel @pilotdesktop. The name of the series is CFI Review

In the series, JJ and Grace delve into the differences and similarities between our hardware and the Cessna 172’s controls. Variations exist across different Cessna models, but Desktop Pilot’s controls help build crucial muscle memory for aspiring pilots.

Let’s break down what they discovered:

In Part One, they compare Desktop Pilot’s Switch Panel to a classic 1970s Cessna 172, highlighting subtle differences while emphasizing the importance of muscle memory.

Part Two features a comparison of Desktop Pilot’s Carb Heat Vernier Throttle Quadrant with a Cessna 172’s controls. They found that our controls mirror the functionality of the real aircraft, including features like throttle friction lock and mixture adjustments.

In Part Three, they explore Desktop Pilot’s Flaps Panel, noting its four positions and speed recommendations, although it functions slightly differently from the aircraft they compare it to. Part Four focuses on Fuel Tank Select, highlighting its ability to switch between tanks and the emergency fuel cut-off feature on our sim hardware.

Part Five discusses the Parking Brake, which operates similarly to the Cessna 172’s control mechanism. Finally, Part Six covers the Trim Wheel, which serves to alleviate flight control pressures and mimics the Cessna’s operation.

Overall, JJ and Grace found Desktop Pilot’s hardware to be of excellent quality and accuracy, providing valuable learning opportunities for students to familiarize themselves with Cessna aircraft from the comfort of home. These flight controls offer a cost-effective complement to in-flight training, making aviation education accessible to enthusiasts everywhere.

A Beginner's Guide to Flight Simulation

Are you new to flight simulation and feeling overwhelmed by where to start? You’re not alone. Many beginners face the same questions and uncertainties. In this article, we’ll simplify the process and guide you through the essentials to kickstart your flight simulation journey.

First things first. A mid-tier gaming PC is essential, and XforcePC stands out as a top choice for aviation simulators. To see more in depth information you can watch Michael Brown’s X-Plane 12 Benchmarks here.

Then for monitors you can use a curved monitor such as the SAMSUNG Odyssey 49″ or if you want a more immersive experience, you can use triple monitors.

When it comes to simulator software, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 offers a beginner-friendly, game-like experience, while X-Plane 12 is ideal for those serious about real-world pilot training.

Now, let’s talk about hardware. A yoke and rudder pedals are fundamental, and Desktop Pilot is developing its own brand, set to be showcased at FlightSimExpo 2024. For maximum realism, consider the Vernier TPM or Carb Heat Throttle Quadrants, along with other essential controls like the Ignition Switch Panel, Trim Wheel, Flaps Panel, Parking Brake, and Fuel Tank Select.

Mounting these controls on your desk in a configuration resembling a real aircraft cockpit will help you build muscle memory and enhance your experience.

For those seeking a comprehensive solution, Desktop Pilot is gearing up to launch its full flight simulator in June 2024. This simulator features a G1000 Glass Cockpit with programmable autopilot and all essential flight controls found in the C172 G1000 cockpit. From the yoke and rudder pedals to the G1000 Multifunction Display and fuel selector panel, this turnkey solution provides everything you need to take your flight simulation to the next level.

Embark on your flight simulation journey with confidence, knowing that Desktop Pilot is here to support you every step of the way.
